Lack of Concentration
Lack of concentration can affect everyone and can come out of nowhere. There are several reasons you might have trouble concentrating at any given time, each with relatively simple solutions that can help improve your focus. If you are having issues maintaining your focus and concentration, consider the follow causes and their possible solutions.
Distractions are a very common reason for the lack of concentration. Things such as beautiful weather, interesting music or shows playing in the background, or daydreaming of your next vacation can all contribute to your reduced focus. If you believe this is the case, try turning off the music and television, closing the blinds, or even stepping outside for a few moments. The idea is to either remove the distraction from your environment or indulge in said distraction for a short time. The indulging in the distraction can help to clear your mind so you can start again with fresh focus.
Needing to eat can also lead to problems concentrating. Not only will you be focused on the empty feeling in your stomach, but you will also likely have lower blood sugar which can cause brain fog and trouble concentrating. Try eating a small snack, such a trail mix, fruit, or cheese with crackers. If it is close to mealtime, take a break and fix yourself a meal. This will help to level out your blood sugar and remove the distracting feeling of being hungry. The break will also help to clear your mind so you can tackle the task with fresh focus. Also try switching your soda, coffee, or energy drinks for fresh water. The caffeine and sugar in these types of beverages can cause your mind to lose its ability to remain focused for extended time frames.
Worry and stress can both cause the lack of concentration because your mind is dwelling on other things that are demanding your attention. If stress is causing you problems keeping focused at work, school, or at home, look into stress reduction techniques. Meditation, a walk in the sun, and deep breathing all can help to reduce your stress level and allow you to better concentrate on your tasks. Taking up a new hobby, writing in a journal, and talking with a loved one also can help reduce stress. Find the method that best works for you and practice it daily for best results.
In some cases the lack of concentration may indicate an underlying health problem. If you have tried a number of concentration improving techniques and still have trouble focusing, you might want to speak with a doctor about your symptoms. Depression, for example, can cause trouble concentrating among other things and is easily addressed with medication, counseling, and lifestyle changes. Other possible causes include, menopause, thyroid problems, poor diet, and attention deficit disorder.
It is normal to experience times of reduced concentration, particularly around mealtimes, and at the end of the day when you are tired. Getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and dealing with stress can all help to reduce episodes of poor concentration.
